7/5/2023 0 Comments Double dragon cartoon marian![]() ![]() The new story and setting start out much the same as the first game, with Marian taking a gut-punch and brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee emerging from a garage to rescue her. It could have been stupid like those failed examples I mentioned earlier, but it works because it still reveres the games that came before. Yet this new Double Dragon manages to update the series’ brawling gameplay while instilling a healthy dose of nostalgia for the time period that birthed the franchise. It’s dangerous, and I’ve seen more than a handful of gamers put off by the unique art style or the game’s failure to iterate on the stellar Double Dragon Advance. Neon takes some pretty big liberties of its own by mixing in science fiction elements and characters, ample humor, and a neon-drenched eighties vibe that even the original 1987 game lacked. Sure, so did the goofy old kids’ cartoon, the horrendous theatrical film, and the wacky Marvel comic, but those all lacked the charm and simplicity of the actual Double Dragon games. Neither a sequel nor a straight remake of the original game, Neon instead reimagines the Double Dragon franchise. When Wayforward and Majesco announced Double Dragon: Neon, I was of course ecstatic. But not this dude - I still look forward to each and every brawler that comes along, even if they sometimes disappoint ( Kung Fu Strike). As players aged, some apparently outgrew the genre, taking little interest in modern day beat-em-ups. Its detailed graphics, brilliant soundtrack, interesting weapons, and cooperative multiplayer completely enthralled me. While the cartoon wasn’t a phenomenal success, the video game continued to spin out sequels, becoming one of the most influential games of its time.Like many children of the seventies and eighties, the original arcade Double Dragon was my first introduction to the beat-em-up genre. No longer a damsel in distress, she was now a Metro City police officer and could kick her own share of buttocks.ĭouble Dragon was packaged into DIC/Bohbot’s weekend package Amazin’ Adventures for its syndicated run. Another change from the video game was Marian’s character. Aside from the martial arts moves and street weapons of the video game, the rival gangs also had at their disposal a large supply of battle vehicles and laser guns. Neither brother could actually kill the other, because each felt the other’s pain.īefore long, things were patched up between the two, and they teamed up to fight the real enemy, the ultra-evil Shadowmaster. Actually, Jimmy was the Shadowboss, a fact that set off several episodes of violent sibling rivalry. One evening, long-lost Jimmy Lee burst into the school, claiming the Shadowboss was after him. Operating out of Metro City’s Chinatown, the Dragonmasters battled the evil Shadowboss and his henchmen (including everyone’s favorite 7’2” big-head thug, Abobo).īy his eighteenth birthday, Billy was a special Metro City deputy and an instructor in the Dragonmasters’ martial arts school. Billy grew up under the tutelage of the Oldest Dragon, leader of the crimefighting ninja clan known as the Dragonmasters. In the animated Double Dragon, Billy and Jimmy were separated at birth. It wasn’t much to work with in making a cartoon series, but compared to the arcade version of Pac-Man, this was Shakespeare. The arcade version of Double Dragon had a simple premise: helpless Marian had been kidnapped by thugs, and twin martial artist brothers Jimmy Lee (blonde hair) and Billy Lee (dark hair) beat up a lot of people to get her back.
